About University of Connecticut
The University of Connecticut, commonly known as UConn, is a public research university in Connecticut, with the main campus located in Storrs, a division of Town of Mansfield, which is a rural town that was incorporated in 1702. The land where the Town of Mansfield lies today was acquired from the Mohegans, by a group of Norwich settlers.
UConn first started as The Storrs Agricultural School, named after Charles and Augustus Storrs, the brothers who donated the land that made the university’s founding possible, and was founded in 1881, being know today as one of the largest employers in eastern Connecticut, as well as the flagship university campus for the State of Connecticut.
Through its 6 campuses, UConn serves more than 28 000 students, being considered a Public Ivy, by higher education specialists, offering them more than 100 majors, 16 graduate degrees, as well as 5 professional degree programs.
The U.S. News and World Report has repeatedly ranked UConn the top public university in New England, being also placed by specialists among the top 25 public research universities in the nation. The university is best known for its programs in health care administration, law, dentistry and family studies, and the undergraduate programs are ranked 64 among all national universities.
The UConn athletic teams are known as the Connecticut Huskies, who participate in the NCAA Division I-A, including in the Big East Conference, in all sports, except in men’s hockey, in which they compete in Atlanta Hockey, as well as in Hockey East, for women’s hockey. The Huskies are best known for their achievements in men’s and women’s basketball, being consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation.
